Social Principles To Guide Your Living
The United Methodist Church has a long-standing commitment to social justice, dating back to 1908 when the Methodist Episcopal Church (North) first adopted a Social Creed calling for “equal rights and justice for all (people).” Over the years, other branches of Methodism, such as the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and the Methodist Protestants, also embraced similar commitments. In 1946, the Evangelical United Brethren Church introduced its own Statement of Social Principles, further solidifying our shared dedication to justice.
In the past twelve years, United Methodists from around the world have participated in a review of these guiding principles to address today’s most pressing social issues. This spring, the General Conference adopted the Revised Social Principles, which reflect the Church’s response to issues that affect both local and global communities. These principles focus on four key areas: The Community of All Creation, The Economic Community, The Social Community, and The Political Community—each relevant to how we live out our faith in today’s world.
We invite you to join an Advent 2024 study to explore these Revised Social Principles and their relevance to today’s church. The study will be led by Pastor Seongmin Kim and Rev. Steve Zekoff at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday mornings in the Hearth Room on December 1, 8, 15, and 22. You are welcome to attend any or all of the sessions. Copies of the Revised Social Principles will be available for review starting in November, with a small copy fee of $10.
